Attention mechanism in recruitment and promotion (academia): from references to peer reviews
2026-10-08
I am just tired of requesting reference letters from my acquaitance professors. It is quite frustrating.
Nowadays, claude and codex are capable of drafting and polishing CVs and motivation letters corresponding to different positions and even filling in online application forms. However, the most valuable part is reference letters, especially for those portals requiring professors to send the references themselves. References are so crucial for a nobody, while I don't want to bother the same professors for several times. I can imagine how the professor would feel, if his email box is often occupied with my request emails.
Reference mechanism originates in Germany, dating back to 19 century. Professors used to recommend students or assistants to each other. It represents how much potential you have and how important you are in the academia network. Imagine such a academic network, each node represents one worker in the network, some are bigger because of their bigger name, some are negliable nodes. The strength of reference represents the attention weight between professors and trainees. The advantage is that you cannot (or way more hard) fake the judgement from the surrounding recognized guys. However, providing such certificate to serveral different institutes would consume professors' energy and patience.
Peer-review acts as a sophiscated process of knowledge generation also reflects the similar or even worse dilemma. Traditionally, skyscraper of each subject needs carefully placing each brick. Peer-review make sure the information and knowledge are readable, understandable and deliverable. In other words, this process make sure the brick are placed accurately and nicely. AI slops substantially increase the burden of human reviewers so we may have to construct a new "expressway" for academia community.
